Gray's Norwegian Junior Open 2014

Skrevet av Mark Hornby den .

Now in it's second year this event was successfully staged by Lysaker squash CLub over the week-end. The inaugural event was played in Stavanger last year. The move to Oslo has clearly been popular with foreign competitors. 24 foreign players participated across the age categories with players from England, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
This influx of foreign players increased the playing standard from last year and placing's for Norwegian players were hard to achieve. Never the less a number of home players finished in the top three placing's for their event.
A special mention must go to Sigurd and Trym. Sigurd won the under 17 title winning five matches on the way. In his final he lost the first two games by the narrowest of margins both 10-12, however he did not dispair he fought amicable to take the third 13-11 the fourth 11-7 and in a dramatic climax the fifth 11-8. Trym's final was also a five setter the first four games see-sawed back and forth the Norwegian losing the first narrowly 11-9 winning the second 11-4 losing the third 11-8 again coming back to take the fourth 11-8 but just losing out in the fifth 11-7.
Other notable performances came from Andrea and Madelaine. Andrea must have been pleased making up for her disappointment at the junior NM a couple of weeks ago. She finished second in the girls under 19. Madelaine also put up a sterling performance playing up an age group at under 15 finishing a creditable third.
A very big thanks must go to Lysaker Club and all the other parental helpers for all their efforts in making the event so enjoyable for everyone. I am sure it will help build up the reputation of this event on the European calendar and attract even more players in the future........Bring on next year!!!!!

Junior NM 2014

Skrevet av Mark Hornby den .

This seasons junior NM was played over the week-end at Toppform sola in Stavanger. Forty two players travelled from around Norway hoping to be crowned Norwegian Junior Champion.

The event started on Friday night through Saturday with most of the finals on Sunday. In the girls events there were two doubles Madeleine Hylland did the double winning both the under 13 and under 15 girls events, and Lotte Toverud won the under 17 and 19 girls events. Well done to both of them!

In the boys NIcolai Bø won his class without hardly breaking into a sweat however the other boys events proved to be a lot closer. At under 15 Gard and Jesper were again battling it out in another 5 set match. Gard eventually won the fifth game 11-4 although that score does not reflect how close that game was.

Filip pinto was playing SIgurd Dhale in the under 17 final. Sigurd got off to a good start taking a close first game 13-11however FIlip managed to stay calm and gradually fought his way back into the match taking the next game 11-8. The third was also close again FIlip managed to squeeze that one 11-9. The fourth game was characterised by some patient rallying by FIlip and a number of unforced errors from Sigurd. Filip took that game 11-3 and the title three games to nil.

So to the under 19 boys title. Of all the events most pundits would have had a clear favourite in Trym to take this title. The match turned out to be much closer than predicted. Trym took the first 11-6 and just scrapped a closely fought second 12-10. At that point it looked like a 3-0 victory was on the cards! However a feisty Bjorn Rune was not going to give in without a mammoth fight. Bjorn battled his way back into the match with a consistent barrage of hard hitting. This put Trym on the defensive and forced a number of errors. The Stavangarian took the next two games 11-9 11-8 To level at 2 all.

In the time out Trym clearly had regrouped as he got off to a good start in the decider. He opened up a lead which he managed to maintain until the final points when Bjorn rune clawed himself back into the game. At 9-9 in the fifth the match was any bodies.....Trym snatching it and feeling mighty releaved to get the title.

Most improved junior award
It is customary to present the most improved junior award for the year at the NM and this year was no exception. Lotte Toverud won the girls award, her victories over the week-end justifying her selection.
The boys had been much more difficult to predict with a number of players making colossal improvements over the year. It was won by Mathias Strang. Well done to both of them!

A big thank-you to Hafrsfjord club members who once again did a sterling job in staging this prestigious even. The next major event is the Norwegian junior open at Lysander 4-6 April!

A truly international event took place at the weekend at Spenst centre in Moss. Under 13 and under 15 teams from Denmark and Sweden played a tri- nation. Event with Norway. This is the third year it has been held previously being played in Malmo in Sweden and Harlev in Denmark.

There were some thrilling matches and It is a good barrometer as to how the Norwegian players are doing relative to their peers in other Scandinavian countries. The signs look good particularly at under 15 where Norway has a number of fast improving players. They pushed the other countries hard with some players winning matches, something which did not happen when this event started back in 2012.
The worthy winners at under 13 were Sweden and at under 15 Denmark. A full list of results can be found at www.tournamentsoftware.com We'll done to all the Norwegian players who participated especially the under 13,s some who we're experiencing international competition for the first time! A daunting task for anyone at any age.
A big thank-you must go to Moss squash club for hosting the event to such a high standard, their efforts were outstanding doing Norway proud!

NM 2014

The cream of Norwegian Squash descended on Myren’s squash centre for this seasons NM over the week-end! There was plenty of high quality matches all played in a competitive but fair spirit.

woman’s event was always going to be a one sided affair with Lotte Eriksen participating. She duly took the ladies title at a stroll making it 10 titles in all that she has won.

The men’s event was not as predictable although Kim are started as favourite. His passage to the final was comfortable where he played Kristian from Hafrsfjord who also had a fairly uneventful passage through.

The final was to prove a mammoth 5 set battle with both players showing a full array of shots and youthful athleticism. Kristian eventually took the title to cause an upset to the delight of the crowd. He has clearly benefited from the squad of players in Stavanger who have been making colossal efforts to improve their game. All credit to kim are who took the loss on the chin. I’m sure he will be back next year for another crack at the title!

Most of the Junior National Team participated in the event showing how much they have improved over the last year and congratulations to Stefan for winning Coach of the year for his work with some of them.

Club of the year went to Hafrsfjord for their continued good work especially their efforts in staging the inaugural Norwegian junior open. The quality of the event was outstanding!
